Summit Season ("Summit Season," "we," "us," or "our") provides a mobile app for snow reports, mountain weather forecasts, and trail/lift status. This policy explains what information the app collects, how it's used, and the choices you have.

1. Information we collect

Summit Season does not require you to create an account or provide your name, email address, or other personal identifiers to use the app. We collect only the following:

  • Location data - if you grant permission, your device's approximate or precise location, used to show nearby resorts on the map and to attach a location to community snow/trail reports you choose to submit.
  • Favorites & preferences - the resorts you save as favorites and app settings (e.g. theme), stored locally on your device and, where a favorites sync feature is enabled, associated with a randomly generated device/user identifier rather than your identity.
  • Community reports - any snow condition, trail, or lift reports you choose to submit, along with the resort and approximate location associated with that report.
  • Usage & diagnostic data - app usage analytics (screens viewed, features used, crash and performance data) collected automatically via Firebase Analytics, to help us understand how the app is used and fix problems.
  • Device & log data - standard technical data such as device type, OS version, and app version, generated automatically when the app communicates with our servers.

We do not collect payment information - Summit Season is free and has no in-app purchases or subscriptions.

2. How we use information

We use the information above to:

  • Show snow reports, weather forecasts, and trail/lift status for resorts you view or favorite
  • Display your position and nearby resorts on the map, if location access is granted
  • Attribute and display community-submitted reports to other users
  • Keep favorites and settings in sync across app sessions
  • Understand feature usage and diagnose crashes so we can improve the app
  • Operate, maintain, and secure our backend services

3. Location data

Location access is optional and requested only when you use a feature that needs it, such as the resort map or submitting a community report. You can grant, deny, or revoke location access at any time in your device's Settings. If you deny or revoke access, the app continues to work, but map and "nearby resorts" features will be limited.

We do not use your location for advertising, and we do not sell location data.

4. Analytics & tracking

We use Google Firebase Analytics to collect aggregated, non-identifying usage data (e.g. which screens are viewed, which features are used, app crashes). This helps us prioritize improvements and fix bugs.

On iOS, if the app requests permission to track you across apps and websites (via Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework), you can allow or deny this at any time from the system prompt or in Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. Denying this permission does not limit any app functionality.

We do not use third-party advertising SDKs, and Summit Season does not display ads.

5. How information is shared

We do not sell your personal information. We share information only in the following limited circumstances:

  • Service providers - infrastructure and analytics providers that process data on our behalf (currently Amazon Web Services for hosting/storage, and Google Firebase for analytics), under their respective privacy and data-processing terms.
  • Weather & resort data sources - to generate forecasts, the app queries third-party weather data providers (such as Open-Meteo, WeatherAPI, and Visual Crossing). These requests use resort coordinates, not your personal location, and are subject to those providers' own privacy policies.
  • Community reports - reports you submit are visible to other users of the app, along with the resort and approximate location you attached to the report.
  • Legal requirements - if required to comply with applicable law, legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Summit Season, our users, or others.

6. Data storage & retention

Favorites and settings are cached locally on your device (so the app works offline) and, where applicable, on our servers, associated with a device identifier rather than your name or email. Community reports and cached resort/weather data are stored on our servers and automatically expire or refresh on a rolling basis. Analytics data is retained by Firebase according to Google's standard retention settings.

Because Summit Season doesn't use accounts, we have no way to link stored data back to your real-world identity beyond what you voluntarily include in a community report.

7. Your choices & rights

You can:

  • Deny or revoke location permission at any time in your device Settings
  • Deny or revoke tracking permission (iOS App Tracking Transparency) at any time in your device Settings
  • Clear favorites and cached data by clearing the app's local storage or uninstalling the app
  • Request deletion of any community report you submitted, or of server-side data tied to your device identifier, by contacting us at the email below with enough detail (e.g. resort, approximate date/time of the report) for us to locate it

If you are located in the EEA, UK, or California, you may have additional rights under GDPR or the CCPA/CPRA (such as the right to access or delete personal information). Contact us using the details below to exercise these rights - since we don't collect accounts or identifiers tied to your real identity, we may ask for details that let us locate the relevant data.

8. Children's privacy

Summit Season is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can delete it.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time to reflect changes to the app or applicable law. If we make material changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the app after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
